Omega
Benefits: Essential
fatty acids in the correct balance in the diet are known essential
nutrients for health, and the most important role identified
so far is their involvement in heart health and brain &
neural tissues - 70% of brain matter consists of Omega 3.
Significant
research shows that the populations of many industrialised nations
including countries of the EU and the US eat significantly lower
levels of essential fatty acids and especially omega-3 than
science shows is required for maintaining good health.
As a consequence, guidelines are being set for consumption of
omega-3 levels across the world. Current advice from the World
Health Organsiation cites the consumption of approximately 2
portions of fatty fish per week and at least 1g of alpha-linolenic-acid
from plant sources as the optimal amount for good health generally,
and cardiovascular health in particular.
There
are three principle 'active' forms of omega-3:- DHA, EPA and
ALA. DHA and EPA are naturally found large quantities
in fatty fish, and ALA is only found in some plants and seeds.
Omega-3 is essential for health, and cannot be made by the body
- however, your body can inter convert each different form of
omega 3 into another. Further information can be found
by using our 'Quick links'.
Dietary
Advice:
For many individuals, eating enough foods rich in omega-3 can
be problematic to achieve. Many people dislike eating
fish or are concerned about possible pollution and mercury contamination
in light of recent research and Government advice. The
World Health Organisation have advised at least 1g per day of
Omega 3 should be eaten from plant sources because of the importance
of Omega 3 to health, yet many people in the west do not eat
adequate seeds and plant materials naturally rich in omega-3.
Therefore, people need to either change their dietary practices
to increase Omega 3 consumption or consider finding alternative
sources such as supplementation.
If
choosing a Supplement, why choose Omega-C?:
Up
to 20% of people choosing to take supplements derived from fish
or plant sources suffer adverse events in the form of stomach
disturbances and burping, with production of an unpleasant aftertaste
- a particuar problem if taken on an empty stomach. What
is more, if taken with foods, the essential fatty acids congeal
in the stomach during normal digestion which severely limits
absorption. This means that a far higher dosage is required
to produce a sufficient increase in EFA blood levels, required
to give optimum benefit - so you have to take a large number
of them to achieve the desired nutritional benefits.
To
address these problems, Omega-C has been developed to provide
a potent supplement form of omega-3 without the unpleasant effects
and with optimal absorption. Omega-C is Entrox® coated
to prevent the capsule breaking down in the stomach -avoiding
stomach disturbances, and optimising absorption, to provide
you with maximum benefit. What's more, added vitamin E
gives Omega-C greater stability, so it has less risk of becoming
'rancid', as other omega supplements can become if they are
exposed to light or warmth.
Bio-availability
data: Omega-C
has been clinically tested according to EU standards to demonstrate
the difference that the Entrox coating makes in improving absorption
of the essential fatty acids. 6 women and 6 men aged between
18 - 55 years took Omega-C or an identical supplement without
the Entrox® coating. The blood levels of omega 3 were determined
at baseline, before the supplements were taken, and after a
24 hour period. All of the study subjects ate the same
low-omega diet during the 24 hours, and fasted overnight before
taking their supplements so that their exposure to omega containing
foods was the same.
Subjects
taking the Omega-C Entrox formulation showed a 33% increase
in total omega-3 plasma (blood) concentrations compared with
only an 8% omega 3 increase in those people taking an identical,
uncoated omega-3 supplement ( four times greater). The
greatest increase in the plasma concentration was seen for ALA
(a form of omega 3), which increased by 120% in the Omega-C
formulation compared with a 57% increase in the uncoated version
of the same supplement. Blood concentrations of other
forms of Omega 3 also increased significantly.
EPA
concentrations showed an increase of 16% for Omega-C compared
to 1% increase for a standard supplement, showing that conversion
to other key forms of omega 3 fatty acids takes place over a
24 hour period.
This
study shows that Omega-C effectively increases omega-3 levels
in people taking the supplement, and, that the absorption of
omega-3 essential fatty acids is significantly improved compared
to ordinary supplements without an Entrox coating. This
means that you need to take a far smaller quantity of Omega-C
to achieve the same benefit as ordinary supplements, without
the unpleasant effects of stomach disturbances!
Precautions:
please consult your physician
for advice and guidance if you are receiving a blood thinning
medication such as Warfarin or Aspirin as omega 3 has a natural
anti-coagulant effect and use with such medications should be
monitored closely.
